Eloquence

·

,

I gaze at you quietly
and occupy my side of the stillness
big enough to accommodate my affairs
but I keep my eyes on you
across the state borders that
I drew on air with lavender chalk
and pretended were there only
so I could give you some sort of space
just in case you need room to maneuver
and with nimble feet for thoughts
I play hopscotch with your movements
and negotiate the shared space
trying to respect your solitude
so we could give and take words
like cultured people
but you look quizzically
at all my fastidious silliness
and pull me from across the mess
of pillows and silken politeness
and we collapse in each other’s arms,
the whole universe undone
and tangled up in our laughter

  1. The emotional understanding and giving by the narrator is exposed in lovely tone and language. Well done.

    1. Yes. Love does that. It’s an added sweetness when other people see it too. 🙂

      Have a great weekend!

  2. Hello Iris! Loved the Eloquence piece you wrote! The character seems exactly like me, there were times that I do that “gazing-looking at you-absorbing the awesomeness that you are-don’t ask why” to him, and then the respecting the solitude then pulling across and the rest… perfect! ❤ I fell in love again today; Karl and I celebrated our first month of being together a while ago (you know I was kinda embarrassed that he was the one who remembered and not me!) Anyway that's all, I'm all smiles whenever I read your poetry, esp. this one today. Keep it coming! 😀

Being included in the encompassment of one’s space is truly special.

    1. Indeed. There are few greater blessings. 😉

      Thank you for your appreciation.

  4. this is beautiful. when emotion overpowers all the other little things 🙂 xx
