The silence is covered in bruises
all attempts at conversation
not enough to break through skin
blue-and-black imprints of thoughts
gather on the surface, suffocating
on these places of knowing that
are tender to the touch but
not quite bleeding
not quite healing
the sum of parts walking around
discolored and half-heartedly
trying to hide its failure
to find something absolute
to connect to something real
ugly and marked and
anxious for someone to ask

“Don’t Fear the Cold”
