In the midafternoons
milky light fills rooms
through west-facing windows
in grains, like sand
falling to the bottom
of an hourglass,
like clarity
entering in shafts
the heart
after a heartbreak.

These handprints of the sun
are music to our walls
and I am content
to find days when
I can just listen
to the sky’s shifting octaves
and watch
as time walks
through colors from
one end of the spectrum
to the other
and know that my heart
from the place of heartache
has come a long way.
