What I dream
when I’m
too tired to dream,
when rest is scarce and
peace is elusive:

That someday,
you and I will
fly away from here
and find a place where
things won’t really be
any easier;
we’d just be able to
face them together

but today is not that day

so I lay my head
on the pillow
and excuse this place
its coldness
for another day,
and tell my heart
it doesn’t have to
feel so ashamed
for wishing
it were someplace better.

Then I say a little prayer
for you.
