Sometimes it just happens
it catches you powerless.

You had a good night’s sleep
you had a gratifying breakfast
there’s no traffic on the way to work
there’s more money in your wallet
than you need
your friends are near
your detractors far, far away

melancholy can just swoop in
without warning
enveloping you in a chill
so forgotten
coupled with a blank emptiness
so familiar
you’re almost too lost
to figure out who you are

and you argue with yourself
not to feel that way
because nothing has even gone wrong
and you argue back
that you’ve changed so much
from the way you had been
on the day it first started
going right.
