Sometimes you have to be cruel
to someone
to be kind
to yourself

I love you
with all the force and completeness
of a night
as it consumes the sky
and reduces even
the grandest cities
to the mercy
of the stars
and a last quarter moon

I adore you
with all the heat and intricacies
of bolts of lightning
and rolling thunder

but there are daggers
I need to purge my spirit of
and a poison lying potent
in my heart
I need to weed out
before it destroys
first me
then our skewed and dysfunctional
that’s all I can get
but do not want

so I will sabotage
the frozen lake of our familiarity
turn us into cold strangers
in exchange
for a lesser danger
